  • ANNUAL REPORT OF OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT

    SERVICES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

    ACADEMIC YEAR 2000-01

    All students on non-immigrant visas

Records were checked in the Fall semester for those students who were enrolled in less than 12 credit hours. Twenty-five letters were sent out. We received four responses from students who were legally in less than full time (last semester, different immigration status such as F-2). One student had received the wrong advise from his major department adviser. We worked with him to keep him in status. In Spring semester no letters were sent out because of the poor response in fall and due to time restraints. However, e-mails were sent to all students reminding them that it was their responsibility to maintain their status. We also informed them how to do that. We also have a chance to talk to students about their status if they apply for on or off campus work permission. If they are out of status we cannot give them work permission or allow them to apply to INS for work permission but we do talk to them and try to work out a way to get them back into status. No reinstatements were applied for this year.

New international students who must make cultural adjustments

Letters were sent in the Fall semester to see how new students were doing. There was no response. F-mails were also sent out to all students encouraging them to get involved with the International Club and other activities on campus. We also continually encourage students to visit us if they have a problem or if they just want to hang around and talk. We have lots of new students who come to the office regularly to visit and meet new friends. We notice that after the first semester or two they don't come around as often. We see this as a sign that they have adjusted to their stay here and don't need us as much anymore. Next year the Peer Mentors will be asked to make more contact with all students especially new students to offer help to them.

Students with inadequate English Language skills

We have communicated more with the English as a Second Language Program and have worked together to help the students with their English language skills.

International students with inadequate academic advisement

A check of the records was not done this year to see if students were making progress toward a degree. This was due to time restraints and the fact that two workshops were offered by Academic Advisement for international students and were poorly attended. In one workshop one student showed up in the other none showed up. This is another project that the Peer Mentors can work on next year.

International students who are not familiar with how to use the library

Two workshops were offered by the Library for international students on how to use the library. Again, as with the Academic Advisement workshops, the attendance was poor. This might be a project we could do with ESL next year.

    Transfer students (from American schools)

A system was set up to make sure all transfer students from American schools were transferred properly for immigration purposes. All transfer student files were marked so that we knew which ones were transfers and could do the immigration paperwork when they arrived in the office.

    Peer Mentors

The Peer Mentors have done a good job helping students and working with the international club. They do need a little more guidance and structure to make them more effective. Next year we will do a better job of training them and assigning them different tasks.

    International Student Senator

We had two international student senators this year. During the fall semester the senator was never here and did very little to help the students. He left at Christmas break and did not come back. Our new senator took over and completed the year successfully. She was always talking to me and asking questions. We also had better contact with student government this year; probably due to the trouble we had with our first senator.

    Club International

Attended some of the club meetings and we worked with the students on putting together the International Student Banquet and other events. We were also in close contact and communicated with the officers of the club and with students who attended the meetings.
