ASSESSMENT REPORT, 2000 - 2001

STUDENT AFFAIRS -

Judy Hurst, Assistant Dean of Student - WSU Davis Campus

1. To continue assessing the needs of the students at the Davis Campus at the conclusion of each semester and planfully meet those needs through services, programs, and personal involvement.

During the 2000 - 2001 academic year, two student surveys were administered one at the end of each semester. The results of both surveys are included in the accompanying pages and some of the suggestions will become part of the Davis Campus' goals for next year. Some of the suggestions that were implemented because of the feedback received from previous surveys include adding a vending machine with sandwiches and other food items, selling drinks from the bookstore in the evenings, sponsoring a Friday Night Movie, and making it possible for receiving an official university transcript from the Davis Campus upon request.

The Student Council participation and membership increased by fifty percent. The attendance at Davis Campus also increased by fifty percent.

2. To continue expanding and developing partnerships with faculty, staff, students and the local community.

The Davis Campus hosted a variety of campus and community speakers for the "Lunch and Learn", "Parenting in Progress", and "Green Backs" programs. These events were well attended. There was a total of fifty-four presentations during the year.

I am affiliated with four community committees, three being connected with the Davis Chamber of Commerce. They include: Community Partnerships - where I served on the "Leadership Summit" committee, Women in Business, and the Leadership Academy which I chair. I'm also a member of the Board of Trustees for the Davis Arts and Humanities Council. Through this involvement, it was possible to work with the Standard Examiner in becoming part of its "Student of the Month" program. During the "Leadership Summit" program, two Davis Campus students prepared and presented a "Power Point" presentation which included the pictures and presentation materials of the speakers participating in the event.

At the beginning of each semester, the Davis Campus hosted a reception for all faculty who would be teaching in the building and in the local high schools. These events allowed the faculty to meet the Davis Campus personnel, to be informed about the services available for themselves as faculty members, and to become familiar with their classroom assignment.

3. To develop a deliberate assessment plan based on educational outcomes, qualitative and quantitative, including the information from the CAS Standards for the benefit of Student Affairs and students on the Davis Campus.

There are several ways of assessing the usefulness of the services and programs offered at the Davis Campus. The service project participation increased demonstrated by the increased number of Tebby Bears received from the "Teddy Bear Round Up", and the number of people who showed up to participate in "Share the Harvest" and "The Giving Tree" projects. An evaluation form is distributed at each workshop. A sample is found in the accompanying information. This feedback is used in determining future topics and speakers. An end of the year "Satisfaction and Suggestion" form was sent to all Student Council Members who participated during the year assessing skills learned and receiving feedback for improving the process. Those forms have not been received back yet so information is still forthcoming.

4. To continue to promoting inclusivity and diversity of students, personnel and programs.

The numbers of students participating in the Student Council increased by fifty percent over last year. There was improved diversity in the Council over the year before. It includes traditional and non-traditional students, males and females, some enrichment from a mixture of cultures, backgrounds and experience. Several of the programs specifically reflected and targeted inclusivity in presenters and topics.

5. To be purposeful.

Having been immersed in new programs with new students has caused us to be immersed with the development and continual reference to the goals and objectives of Student Affairs on the Davis Campus. Flexibility, adaptability and a sense of humor when dealing with change has become important to the staff and to myself. We are committed to moving onward and upward in a proactive, purposeful way.

6. To develop and implement a student leadership training program for the benefit of the Davis Campus Senator, the Student Council/Area Council and the students who participate.

A Student Council Training Program was held in May, 2000 and again in May of 2001. Leadership styles, organizational, team building, communication and planning skills were addressed and the years' plans for programs and service were calendared. The training was held off campus where the students had a chance to experience a new and refreshing environment. During the year, other informal gatherings were held in order to motivate, refresh, rejuvenate and evaluate the progress of the Senator, the Council and the advising received.

7. To use technology to enhance program efficiency and the delivery of services to the Davis Campus students, staff and faculty.

The e-mail link developed for the campus by Dan Guarine made the difficult task of communicating with the students attending the Davis Campus more efficient. While not all students had GroupWise addresses, those who did and who got the messages far exceeded our expectation. Our challenge for the coming year is to have a link developed on the new student e-mail system.

8. To continually improve staff preparation, information, support and communication about current issues, trends, processes and expectations.

A form for expectations of staff members for Student Affairs was developed, discussed and implemented. Three staff meetings were held in informal settings to foster and encourage open communication.

NOTE: I believe most of the Student Outcomes were met through a variety of processes during the 2000-2001 academic year. Students have been assessed in a variety of ways which will become the foundation upon which we will prepare future direction and goals while focusing and reassessing where we have been and what is important.
