Bookstore Assessment

Bookstore
Goals/Outcomes
2000-2001

  • Purchase new software for inventory accountability and improving accuracy for bookstore sales in all departments (point of purchase).
The Bookstore has purchased the Nebraska Book Company's Prism System for total Bookstore management. A new IBM RS 6000 was installed the week of May 7, 2001, and Prism software was loaded. Point of sale hardware and software will be installed July 17, 2001, and training will be conducted in the Bookstore on July 30 and 31. Going live with the system is anticipated to occur on August 1. Bookstore staff will be entering merchandise items into the ICS during the months of June and July.
  • Improve overall Bookstore appearance, environment and ease of shopping. Review product lines and consider products inventory reallocation. Diversify book sections.
Ongoing. Meetings with Bookstore Advisory Committee and representative faculty from the design sector of the Sales and Service Technology Department have been held to discuss rearrangement of the Tradebook, Gift and Art Departments. During the month of June a meeting with a design consultant will be held for assistance in creating a new floor plan. Diversification of the book sections has begun, with the addition of a "faculty author" section, a "faculty recommends" section, and a "NYT's bestseller" section. The new Prism computer software will help identify slow and fast moving titles in the book section and merchandise in the gift section.
  • Continue Bookstore Advisory Committee initiatives and strengthen relationships with faculty and other customer bases.
Ongoing. Student-friendly textbook prices, buyback, and other promotions such as the student/faculty art show and sale, donations to campus organizations and departments, and textbook scholarships are continuing. Also continuing are collaboration with campus departments for sale of items such as the 72-hour survival kits. Bookstore staff has participated in New Student Orientation sessions to explain textbook and buyback policies.
  • Develop methods for the Bookstore to be viewed as an active component within the Union and campus life.
Ongoing. Bookstore staff has been encouraged to participate in various university and Union activities such as Wildcat Family Weekend (the Bookstore was open on the Saturday of the Family Weekend, and a storyteller, in costume, for Wildkittens was provided), sporting events to which the Bookstore staff brought souvenir items for sale to attendees, the student/faculty art show and sale, and New Student Orientation. Bookstore staff also participated in and contributed to the strategic planning process for the Shepherd Union and attended presentations of the Opsis Architectural firm. Bookstore staff participated in the Student Affairs Christmas party, the Union Thanksgiving celebration and Union Chili Cook-off, and the year-end celebration of the end of school.
